Overview
My project is an attempt to describe the formation of new consciousness: first, as historically/materially conditioned; second, as inaugurated via necessarily novel aesthetic experience; third, as transferred to and embodied by small sociopolitical groupings; fourth, as reintroduced materially via political struggle; and ultimately, as diffused socially via institutions.
To this end, I am especially interested in Caribbean surrealism, the emergence of Négritude, and its influence on Frantz Fanon; Chernyshevsky’s influence on Lenin and the early Soviet experiments of Mayakovsky, Bogdanov, and Lunacharsky; and the emergence of proletarian feminism in the 1930s US, especially via Meridel Le Sueur.
