Research Focus

My research centers on 20th-century French literature, Jacques Derrida, computational literary studies, and literary theory. My dissertation, tentatively entitled Computing Fiction: Data and the Deconstruction of Literature, takes up the writings of Derrida, Maurice Blanchot, Georges Perec, and Marguerite Duras to develop an understanding of what literature is, how it can be studied, and what it can teach us about history, form, and politics. It also examines the philosophical foundations of computational literary scholarship, critiquing the assumptions many in the field make about literature and literary theory.
