Culler to be awarded honorary doctorate in Paris

Jonathan Culler, Class of 1916 Professor of English and Comparative Literature Emeritus, who taught in the department from 1977-2020, will be awarded an honorary doctorate by the President of the University of Paris-8, Annick Allaigre, for his work on French literature and critical theory. 

The ceremony on March 26th will be followed by a roundtable discussion of Professor Culler’s work, Penser le langage, théoriser la littérature,  with,Sandra Laugier (Paris-1), Paul-Louis Rinuy (Paris-8), Philip Lewis (Cornell), Sylvie Patron (Université Paris Cité), and Anne Berger (Paris-8). 

Professor Culler has published notably books on French theory, including Structuralist Poetics and On Deconstruction. His Literary Theory: A Very Short Introduction, has been translated into 28 languages. He has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the British Academy.
